What is Dhanteras and What is its Significance?
As ‘Dhan Teras’ marks the beginning of the Diwali festival, it is of special significance. According to a mythological legend, the wife of King Hima saved her son’s life by offering the god of death 'Yama', gold and silver ornaments along with prayers. When Yama came in the form of a snake to take her son’s life, he was blinded by the dazzle of the gold and silver and couldn’t accomplish his task. It is therefore believed that purchasing gold and silver on this auspicious day keeps the lord of death, Yama, away.
How to Celebrate Dhanteras?
Diwali celebrations are mostly about lights and colorful decorations, lots of sweets and crackers. The following are a few common ways to celebrate Dhanteras.

- Women can draw beautiful designs called rangoli on the doorsteps. They can be hand-drawn or can be printed with the help of pre-designed molds available in the market.
- Beautiful kandils and colorful torans made of light-bulbs can be used to decorate the main entrance of the house.
- Traditionally many sweets like laddus, chakli, karanji, chivda, etc. are prepared by women for the festival. However, these can also be bought readymade in the market or you can even buy mithai from a good halwai.
